Faith Formation

SSPJ School -- our parish school undertakes the education of our children in an atmosphere that nurtures and upholds Catholic values. There are two major categories for volunteers:

  • School Board is an elected advisory group to the Pastor and Principal on matters regarding the education policies of our parish school.
  • School Guild is comprised of parents/guardians of parish school children who assist the parish in raising funds by running various events to benefit the school.

R.E.O. - the religious education office helps our public school age children to learn and be formed in the sacred truths and traditions of our faith. Volunteers serve in two major categories:

  • Catechists -- serve as a teacher in Christian instruction for a specific grade level.
  • Office Volunteer -- perform various administrative tasks such as mailings, preparing instruction material, etc.

Youth Ministry - Our youth ministry is a community of support and love in which the young people of Saints Philip & James will come together in various groups to learn more about themselves, others and Christ. In a broad sense, volunteers serve three categories:

  • Adult Volunteer -- in part accompany the group on retreats, trips and work with them during fund raisers (garage sale) and special liturgies.
  • Vacation Bible School & Summer Camp -- various volunteers are needed to run and operate our bible school and summer camp.
  • Office Volunteer -- perform various administrative tasks such as mailings, preparing instruction materials, etc.

Pre-Baptism Team -- this group's mission is both to instruct parents and godparents of children to be baptized in their role as religious educators and to prepare them for their child's upcoming baptism.

Pre-Cana Team -- assists engaged couples in their preparation for Christian marriage. Team members are married
couples and clergy.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults ("RCIA") -- this teams purpose is to facilitate the process of welcoming people who are seeking "full communion" in the life of the Roman Catholic Church. Team-members serve as Catechists, Sponsors or as part of the Hospitality group.

The Charismatic Prayer Group -- they help their members in trying to grow in Christ through a weekly group-prayer meeting.

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament -- this group provides time for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Thursdays from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Church.

The Morning Rosary Group -- gathers to pray all the decades of the rosary on behalf of our Parish family. This begins before the weekday Mass (9:15am) and concludes after Mass.

The Nocturnal Adoration Society -- they meet on the first Friday of each month to honor the Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament.

The Scripture Study Group -- their purpose is to help adults to grow in their understanding of the scriptures.

The Secular Franciscans -- members of this Religious Order, the "Third Order" formed by Saint Francis of Assisi in the 13th century Italy, meet monthly in the Old Church. Open to all --clergy and lay people alike.

The Stewardship Committee -- this group creatively develops ways to bring the biblical teaching on Stewardship into the everyday life of the parishioners.

The Centering Prayer Group -- through the use of the centering prayer, they help its members to deepen their Faith.
